Turn on the TV to a show like Britain’s Got Talent or X Factor and you are watching performing arts. Go to a theatres up and down the country, along with the highly-regarded West End of London, and again it’s performing arts that you will be going to see. If you have ever been lucky enough to see a Cirque Du Soleil Show then you will have been witness to a mix of performance art and circus rolled into one amazing experience.

They are as popular now as they have ever been although the whole industry has taken a battering this year due to Covid19 for sure.

If you are interested in enrolling your children into Performing Arts classes to learn the skills necessary to be all-rounders or train in a specific field of the arts then you’ve come to the right place. Before we discuss where some great classes are available however, let’s discuss what the performing arts actually means for those who are very new to the subject.

What are the Performing Arts?

The performing arts is a name given to a collection of art forms that involve the performers or artists using their bodies, voices and often inanimate objects and props to convey and express artistic expressions.

It is referred to as the visual arts because, unlike those that involve artists using canvases, paints and other materials performance artists are normally using their bodies or voices as their main medium for expression.

A Brief History

You may find it unsurprising that forms of object manipulation, dance, music and theatre have at some extent been a part of human history in almost all cultures throughout the world since time immemorial. Dance and music, for example, can be dated back to prehistoric times. Though other movements like circuses are dated as far back as Ancient Egypt.

Different Types of Performing Art

There are various types of artists who are considered to be practitioners of the performing arts, including, but not limited to:

  • Actors
  • Singers
  • Musicians
  • Dancers
  • Comedians
  • Circus artists
  • Magicians

Along with the actual artists, there is a variety of supporting workers in fields related and involved in the performing arts such as stagecraft, choreography and songwriting.

When someone excels in three of the most common and popular forms of performing arts, that is, dancing, singing and acting, these are known as being a Triple Threat and include the likes of Sammy Davis Jnr, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.

The different styles within each discipline are too numerous to mention here, but needless to say, if it is performed on a stage in a theatre, opera house, at a festival or in a big tent, it is likely considered to be a part of the performing arts.

Performing Arts Studios Near Me

Now that we’ve looked at what the performing arts actually are, you are probably wondering are there classes near to you for you to enrol your young ones in. United Arts Academy is one such place. We hold regular classes for young people of all ages at the Borderville Sports Centre in Stamford, on Ryhall Road.

Whether they want to be the next Ginger Rogers or Fred Astaire, only have a passing interest or are not as yet interested and you just want to send them somewhere where they can use up all their pent up energy, our classes are great. They will get a taster for all aspects of singing, dancing and acting and will learn other skills like choreography.
